...Milford Sound, der weltweit bekannt ist für den Mitre Peak. Viele sagen die Anfahrt zum Milford ist interessanter als die Bootstour selbst. Da sich die Bootsfahrt nicht mehr ausging, können wir nur sagen, dass die Fahrt dorthin wirklich sehenswert ist, auch wenn die gletscherbedeckten Berge für einen Österreicher nichts Besonderes sein mögen.

Auf dem Weg dorthin gab es mehrere lohnenswerte Zwischenstationen. Die schönste war wohl der Key Summit, der ein überwältigendes Panorama über die Region ermöglichte. Den Aufstieg zum Gipfel schafften wir statt drei angeschriebenen Stunden in einer Stunde, schweißtreibend war es trotzdem ;). Dafür entlohnte der geniale Ausblick. Danach gab es noch die Mirror Lakes, die die Berglandschaft in ihrem Wasser spiegelten, bizarre Felsenlandschaften, Gletscher und eine enge Tunneldurchfahrt.

Und schon waren wir da am Milford Sound. Von dort aus war der Blick frei auf das Wahrzeichen Neuseelands, den Mitre Peak, der so ziemlich auf jeden Reiseführer über dieses Land am Cover gezeigt wird ;). Mehr ist über diesen Tag nicht zu sagen, außer dass wir sehr müde waren am Abend ;), so wie eigentlich jeden Abend in Neuseeland. Im Normalfall kommen wir vor 21:00 Uhr nie an unserem Tagesziel an, essen bis 22:00 Uhr, duschen bis 23:00 Uhr und schreiben Blog bis 24:00. Party machen wir dann später ;).

The sound of Milford

As we returned to our accommodation in Manapouri no earlier than noon, we decided to “just” go on a side trip to the second great sound, The Milford Sound, which is famous for one of its adjacent summits, Mitre Peak. According to many peoples opinion, the trip to Milford itself is more interesting than the boats tour itself.

As there was no time for the boat trip, we can only state that the drive was definitely worth, although glacier covered mountain peaks are nothing so special for Austrian people. On the way we had several worthwhile stopovers. The most beautiful probably was the Key Summit, which allowed us a stunning view of the regions landscape. Instead of the signposted three hours, the way up took us just one.

Although it was sweat-inducing, the view from the summit rewarded for it. Other stopovers were the Mirror Lakes, which mirrored the surrounding mountains in its waters, bizarre rock sceneries, glaciers and a narrow tunnel passage. That was it pretty much until we arrived at the Milford Sound. From there we had a clear view to New Zealand’s landmark, the Mitre Peak, which is decorating almost any travel advisory book of this country ;)

There is nothing more to say about this day, beside the fact that we were dead tired in the evening ;) but this is not so much different from any other evening in New Zealand so far. Usually we do not arrive at our daily destination any earlier than 9 P.M., having dinner until 10 P.M. taking a shower until 11 P.M. and writing the blog entry for the day another hour. Party time is right after ;)
