...the highlight for me and the start for a few adventures and experiences…
But first there’s another thing I have to bluff about. By the end of July, Raffaela (the girl from Switzerland who is doing the same management training with me) and myself moved out from the hotel’s staff rooms into a wonderful furnished apartment on Collins Avenue, the best address in North Beach. With two bedrooms, two bathrooms, an open kitchen, dining- & living room and a balcony, we two have plenty of space for us. The white sandy beach and the sea are less than a hundred meters away from our building and from all rooms we have direct ocean view. On the other side of the house is a wonderful creek where manatees are possible to see. This creek is also the “border” to the famous “millionaires row”, where just the richest can afford to have a house.
Exactly one month after we moved in, I found a lovely, old looking, black and white Volkswagen Beetle on Ebay, watching me like a cute little orca baby and telling me: “Bet on me, bet on me…!” and I bet on her. By the end of the auction I got her for just two thousand dollar which was a fantastic deal. The same day I put her on my name, just when I arrived at home coming from the auto tag agency, I could have sold her again already to an old man living in the same building. It happened to me ten more times since then! But there is no sale, she’s all mine now!
Three days later, when I pushed her a little bit to a round trip to downtown Miami and back, she just broke down on the way home. The starter was not working anymore… Lucky I was already a AAA member (automobile club) and the tow didn’t cost me a cent! It took them a few days to find out what she got and that was just when I had the appointment for doing the Florida drivers license. There was no other way but to rent a car and that’s what I did. Doing the drivers license here, is a cultural experience! Apart from waiting for hours, the written test (40 questions / 10 out of them you can get wrong) took me about 3 minutes and the driving test took place on a special lot just for the people getting tested. No driving on a normal road! After 7 minutes, I was finished with turning left, going straight, turning right, stopping and driving frontside into the parking lot. Incredible!
With my new drivers license in my hand, I drove to a place called Coral Gables, a neighbourhood southwest of downtown Miami. There you find yourself in a complete different world. This place is a total jungle with big trees, quiet parks and beautiful houses hidden in the woods. One of the oldest hotels in Florida, the fantastic Biltmore with its golf course is by far the highest building around there. Another unique tourist feature in Coral Gables is the Venetian Pool, a wonderful place to relax and swim.
My little orca baby has been fixed and can not get enough from driving around Miami and the beaches since then. Her inside and the engine are actually from a 1999, so she’s in a pretty good shape. The body has some parts from a 1972 but the old look she got from a 1965. A really funny car! Did you actually know that these old Beetles can swim? ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qB0lb401ZU )
Well, let me also add some pictures from the place where I have been today. Key Biscayne, an island south of Miami that includes a small park of preserved nature.
As you can see, I am doing perfectly well here. Even though work can be hard sometimes, this place here is so relaxing and the constant sun is such an energy booster that I feel good all the time.
Big hug and greetings to all corners of the world from your Alain.
What a cutie she is. Looks like you've finally found your dreampartner ;-) .... you better hold on tight to her
