There was a sign for a lake and since we've already camped at a lake before, we thought it would be good to drive there build up our tent. After like one hour of driving through a dark forest and off-road tracks we came to a . We had to decisions: Either we go left...or right. So we just flipped a coin! The coin said “head”, ...but we forgot what direction “head” meant, so we just drove right. ;)
Yeah... after another 30 minutes we came to a sign, which was kind of familiar to me. That was the point, when we realized that we just returned to the beginning of our ride! Well, as I said.. our instinct tried to make fun of us! So we just made a small break, had a coke and didn't surrender! :) Because it wouldn't help to stop and do nothing, so we started again and took another direction, forgetting the lake as a destination to sleep. Later on we stopped at another spot but headed further north, because we thought a place with a sign “Poisonous Testing Zone” wouldn't be the perfect sleeping berth, hehe. Still full of motivation (maybe a bit less of that) we drove 20k on dark off-road track until we found a nice meadow. The morning after there were several big trucks entering the street where we slept and we found out that we camped at the entry of a company. ;)
Later on we arrived at Rainbow Beach. We didn't want to pay 20 bucks for accomodation, so we first asked in the hostels, whether we can work there in return for a bed to sleep, but we couldn't, so we found a camp for 4,85$ a night! A bargain! It was a really nice place, directly at the beach and with very friendly neighbours. A big family from children to the young-at-heart grandpa.
They told us exciting stories about their life, the Aborigines and must-see places in Australia. It was their last night at the camp so I said jokingly that if they want to get rid of some camping chairs we could still need some! Next day, when I woke up I saw 3 Camping chairs and a foldable bench in front of our tent. We were so happy and wanted to thank them, but our nice neighbours were already gone. So if you can read this – Thanks! :)
What next? Oh, I think that the canoeing trip really kind of released an active part of me! In the camp, I woke up and felt a huge need for running. So I got out of my bed (=Car), and just went running at the beach. At the left, at the other side of the water I saw Fraser Island, as I was putting pedal to the metal straight to the horizon. An Amazing Feeling, which I repeated the next day when I wanted to move again.
On Thursday, we started our Fraser Island trip. After an insctruction about our Four Wheel Drive, we went to the ferry. Our group was consistent of 11 people. 6 Germans, 4 French Guys and a Korean. First, we drove to Lake McKenzie, a very beautiful Place. The Water is so clear you can drink it!...But we stopped doing that, when we saw a baby taking a leak in it! ;) Next was Lake Wabby, a green-”couloured” lake. It was really beautiful and the water very refreshing. Again, my active part was calling and I swam a lap before just relaxing on the sand.
Then it started to get really, really funny! It was my turn to drive, yeehaa! First time 4WD, first time in the middle of the jungle! I can definitely assure you, that there aren't a lot of things in the world that pump up your adrenaline as much as what I experienced! Driving through an Australian jungle, feeling like subdueing a monster and all that with Metallica from the speakers is one of the greatest adventures I've had in my life! Just... freakin' amazing!!
Later that day we built up our tents at the beach, had something to eat and a nice campfire. After some Goonbags we went to bed, because we all were quite tired. Next Morning, we realized that we were camping just a few kilometers away from the Maheno shipwreck, a ship that was caught by a strong cyclone and beached in 1935 on Fraser Island. Quite interesting what it looked like today. There were a lot of corals an small animals (saw a big spider) on the wreck and some parts weren't recognizable anymore, but you could still imagine how it was floating on the ocean.
Then we went to Indian Head and the Champagne Pools. They kind of looked like natural-built whirlpools and soon I understood where the name came from. When the big waves break there is foam on top of the water like when you're pouring Champagne into a glass.
When I climped up a rock, something really unexpected happened to me. Just wanted to watch the waves breaking against the cliff I didn't see a big wave coming and SPLASH there was water spattering several meters high (approx. 7m) against me. Such a power I didn't expect pressing against me and I was lucky I could grip a rock and didn't fell... but unfortunately I wore my normal pants with my digicam in the pocket. So far it looks like the days of my camera are numbered... Touche!
We slept in an Aborigine-Camp and a guy showed us how to play Didgeridoo, which was quite cool. But I was so tired again, that I laid down at the campfire and immediately fell asleep! ;) But not for a long time, because we wanted to see the sunrise at Indian Head. So we packed our 4WD and drove there in the middle of the night. Unfortunately there were a lot of clouds, but still a nice experience! Then we stopped at Eli Creek, before our Fraser trip came to an end and we had to take the ferry back to Rainbow Beach.
It was a very great trip! But also very weird, because you hear so much things about the island and the tours....some say that it's the most beautiful thing they've ever seen. And suddenly you are there, you see all these places that you know from pictures and you get your own view of the island. Strange, but I can definitely say, that it's worth going to Fraser Island!
Today Leo, Woutsie and me are leaving Rainbow Beach after a great weak full of new experiences. Yesterday, I wanted to make a plan and came up with 2 (see the picture). Right now where tending to the first one:
“Wherever the destiny will lead us! ...and may the force be with us!”
Keep on rockin' ...
